In our lectionary passage from Mark this week, a rich young man encounters Jesus and asks how he can inherit eternal life? They have a conversation and ultimately the rich young man is dissatisfied with Jesus' answer and walks away. He does not "come, follow me (Jesus)." The text tells us that Jesus loved this young man, but the young man couldn't surrender what Jesus required. Metaphorically, his fists were clenched, and he couldn't receive Jesus' gift for lack of open hands. Let us explore what Jesus is asking of us; how hard could it be?
